Equinelox

Celebrating the bond

How best to celebrate the special bond between your horse and its human?

“With a superb piece of jewellery that blends precious metal with braided hair from your horse” says silversmith Damian Maloney.

His Equinelox range combines lustrous horsehair with silver or gold individually handcrafted bracelets, rings and bangles.

detail“I searched for an expression of the bond that is subtle, very beautiful but, above all, uniquely meaningful to the person concerned.

By using actual hair from your horse I can achieve it.”

DetailOnly a single length of tail hair is required – about 1cm in diameter for a bracelet or a bangle and a fraction of that for a ring.

Damian shampoos and conditions the hair to a lustrous finish, then braids it under great tension so it will hold its shape perfectly when combined with silver or gold. Each piece is custom-made to the size of an individual client’s wrist or ring finger.

“The strength and durability of horsehair is legendary, but its marriage with silver and gold in jewellery is even more beautiful than I’d imagined,” he said.

The resulting pieces are ideal for eveningwear yet rugged enough for everyday hacking about, as Damian’s wife Allison attests.

Detail of EQ600She has field-tested the Equinelox range on the forested riding trails near their home at Rosevale in Northern Tasmania with her thoroughbred mare “Strop”, who – “plenty of attitude, but not quite fast enough for the racetrack” – graciously supplied the hair for the prototypes.

Designed as a perfect keepsake or memento, each piece also makes a special gift or trophy and, with prices direct from the maker starting below $120, pony club riders are not excluded.

Damian Maloney also makes individual one-off pieces in consultation with clients who want special design features. For those who do not wish to supply horsehair he will provide it in the natural colour of their choice.
